An antiretroviral therapy (ART) regimen consisting of the protease inhibitor lopinavir/ritonavir (Kaletra) plus the integrase inhibitor raltegravir (Isentress) suppressed HIV viral load as well as a traditional 3-drug highly active ART (HAART) combination, while avoiding potential adverse side effects of nucleoside/nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs), according to study findings reported this week at the XVIII International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2010) in Vienna.

S/GSK1349572 (better known as GSK572), the second-generation integrase inhibitor being developed jointly by Shionogi and ViiV Healthcare, continues to show potent antiviral activity with good tolerability, according to 2 studies presented at the XVIII International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2010) this week in Vienna. GSK572 worked against HIV with some raltegravir resistance mutations and has a high genetic barrier to resistance itself. Based on these findings, the companies announced the drug would soon enter Phase 3 trials.

New results from a survey of more than 2000 people with HIV/AIDS around the world has shown that HIV patients and their healthcare providers may not communicate effectively, which can adversely influence disease progression, treatment outcomes, management of side effects, and quality of life. The International Association of Physicians in AIDS Care (IAPAC) released the survey findings this week to coincide with the XVIII International AIDS Conference in Vienna.

Local HIV/AIDS epidemics in some large U.S. cities have reached the status of "generalized epidemic," meaning there is significant HIV transmission outside defined risk groups such as gay/bisexual men and injection drug users, researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported at the XVIII International AIDS Conference this week in Vienna. They also found that poverty, rather than race/ethnicity per se, is the major demographic factor influencing HIV prevalence among heterosexuals in economically disadvantaged urban areas.

Eradication of HIV -- the long sought cure for AIDS -- appears more scientifically feasible than ever before, researchers reported at a meeting sponsored by the International AIDS Society in the lead-up to the XVIII International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2010) taking place this week in Vienna. Speaking at the AIDS 2010 opening plenary, Sharon Lewin explained that universal life-long antiretroviral treatment is increasingly unsustainable, and finding a cure would be fiscally sound as well as beneficial to patients.
